When you mention mathematics to most people, they don’t usually think of art—they think of numbers.  But I have always seen artistic beauty in mathematics. The beauty of geometric patterns is what most people would recognize from high school math class. However, there are many areas of mathematics that study the beauty of repeating patterns and the shapes of objects.  These disciplines are the ones that always have fascinated me.

Buildings are one of my favorite subjects to draw and paint. I like to emphasize the geometric shapes that form the buildings and then surround the buildings with a simplified, stylized scene. I also enjoy painting flowers and landscapes in a stylized way giving them an abstract background. For me, the basic shapes tell the story. I use my art to share my feelings of joy and appreciation for the beauty found in the shapes and details of everyday life.

My newest way to explore geometric shapes is to create still life compositions using patterns of sunlight and shadow. In order to create these artworks, I have started collecting antique colored glass and crystal.  I set up the glass pieces on my drawing table on bright, sunny days and arrange them to get interesting patterns. Then, I photograph the resulting still life. I mat and frame the photographs and I also make them into note cards. This year, my glass photographs were the subjects for my 2010 calendar.
